This is the new album by Mark Kozelek under his Sun Kil Moon moniker. Kozelek rose to prominence as a songwriter in the Red House Painters, moving over to the Sun Kil Moon name at the turn of the century, this is his fourth album released by his own label Caldo Verde.
The previous full length 'April' involved multiple layers of Kozeleks trademark breezily melancholic finger picking and earnest vocals as well as electric guitars, drums and the occasional stringed instrument or backing vocal from friends like Will Oldham.
On 'Admiral Fell Promises' Kozelek comes to us un-adorned, accompanying his fine voice with usually just his spanish nylon string guitar. Songs are constructed of multiple parts, his lyrics return to common themes of travel and love and although the album forms a singular mood there are flashes of truly shocking brilliance that emerge sudden and fully formed.
